UPDATE: I've struggled with this book, but finally at Chapter 7, enough is enough. In Chapter 6, there is some kind of code error (at least in the Kindle edition) in at least half of the code examples. I have watched the videos, downloaded the sample code and read the book carefully. The amazing thing is that sometimes the code is different in the video, sample project AND book. I don't even know where to go with that.

I have wasted so much time. Some of the comments to my original review have attacked me as working for a rival publishing house. That is really unfair and weak. I'm just a working professional who expects a professional product when I pay for it. My gut tells me that the first edition was maybe good, but that this version was thrown together. There is a rumor that another version is in the works, but given my experience with this edition I have to admit I'm not sure I'd buy another Apress Press book, ever.

On a positive note, there seems to be consensus that the Lynda website iOS tutorial, by Simon Allardice is quite good.

I've had good experience with Lynda in the past. I am going to try that and I have purchased the iPhone iOS 5 Development Essentials book by Neil Smyth, also available on Amazon. It seems good and methodical. I will post a review on it when I get to the tutorials. If nothing else it seems like a good reference book for beginning iOS developers.

Another plus for this publisher is that they update their books regularly and make them available on Amazon for free download for purchasers of previous versions, so they are always showing the current SDK. Finally, I'm about 20% of the way through the Sam's Learn iOS Programming in 24 Hours and it is outstanding.

It actually goes through the header and implementation code, line by line, so there are no mysteries. I'll do a review of this book when I get through it all, but Sam's books are consistently winners for beginners.
